You are someone you may know may have some difficulty navigating social media. Here are some ways that you can help disabled individuals enjoy your content!
- Add photo descriptions. For the visually impaired community, it can often hard to decipher what exactly you have posted a photo of. It only takes a few extra seconds to add " Sadie the black lab Guide dog in a sit next to Rhea the German Shepard in a grassy field".
- Add a flash or trigger warning. If a content is a particular popular trigger, add TW: Sexual Assault before the post. This gives people the option to decide if it is healthy for them to open it. It is also important to include a trigger warning for things such as flashing lights as it can encourage seizures.
- Use capital letters at the start of each word in a hashtag. This helps screen reader users when it comes to having the phone pronounce the word correctly.
- Use inclusive language. Overall, being respectful and not reinforcing harmful stereotypes will draw underrepresented communities to your page.
- Choose emojis strategically. Screen readers read what the literal meaning of an emoji is out loud. It will announce " red heart" every time a red heart is used.
